Sonja Shaw

Sonja Shaw is the president of the Chino Valley Unified School District board, which she joined in 2022.¹ A former personal trainer, she advocates for parents' rights.²

Her campaign focuses on reading, writing and math, and opposing transgender girls competing on female athletic teams.² She supported a policy requiring schools to inform parents if their child went by a different name or gender pronouns at school.¹ She proposes pushing for fiscal transparency and fighting the restructuring of the state education department, and she plans to act as an independent check on the appointed education commissioner.³

In 2023, she pressed the district to adopt the state’s first parental notification policy, which a judge later partially blocked after the state sued.⁴ She says the district saw measurable academic gains and was highlighted by a Stanford University study as a model for post-COVID academic recovery.⁵ She presided over a 2023 school board meeting where the state superintendent was escorted out during a debate over transgender student rights.⁶
