Overview
State Senator Lakesia Collins, who previously served in the Illinois House, was a certified nursing assistant and labor organizer.1 She chaired the Illinois House Black Caucus.1 Her campaign says she helped pass the KIND Act for foster youth living with relatives and the Birth Equity Initiative, which expands insurance coverage for doulas and midwives.2 She also sponsored laws allowing police to remove squatters and strengthening school sexual misconduct reporting requirements.3 Collins has proposed eliminating several economic development tax credits to free up $700 million in state revenue annually.4 She advocates for affordable homeownership, saying high housing prices are out of reach for average-income families.5
