Overview
Fiona Ma is California's State Treasurer, a position she has held since 2019.1 She previously served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, in the State Assembly, and on the State Board of Equalization.2 She is a certified public accountant.2
Ma has called California's legal cannabis market a 'complete disaster' and proposes organizing a stakeholder group to overhaul Proposition 64 through the Legislature.3 She says she would prioritize building affordable housing on college campuses and state-owned land.4 She has proposed creating a zero-interest revolving loan fund for workforce housing, drawn from 5 percent of the Building Homes and Jobs Trust Fund's annual revenue.5 She supports exempting military retirement pay from state income taxes and increasing fentanyl awareness in schools.6 She also wants to keep coastlines clean and protect water from pollution.4
Her campaign says that as Treasurer, she has overseen a state investment portfolio of $150 to $250 billion and helped secure top bond ratings for California. In the Assembly, she authored legislation to ban toxic chemicals in baby products and to strengthen protections for victims of domestic violence. On the Board of Equalization, she ordered three external audits of the agency.7, 24, 2
